The 70/20/10 Model is a Learning and Development model based on research by Michael M. Lombardo and Robert W. Eichinger for the Center for Creative Leadership. The concept states that development typically begins with realization of a need and motivation to do something about it, and that a blend of different learning approaches “in concert” can provide powerful learning. Lombardo and Eichinger stated that “the odds are that development will be”:
- about 70% from on-the-job experiences, tasks, and problem solving.
- about 20% from feedback and from working around good or bad examples of the need.
- about 10% from courses and reading.
The forgetting curve illustrates the decline of memory retention in time. The forgetting curve shows that humans will forget 90% of newly learned knowledge in a matter of days unless they consciously review the learned material.
Most training and e-learning include a “quiz” immediately after the learning, giving everyone a high chance of remembering everything because they only learnt it five minutes beforehand! The true measure of what someone has learnt has to be carried out both on an on-going basis and long after the learning has taken place, otherwise the measure is inaccurate.

Therefore the combination of learning and assessment will not only enable an accurate measure of someone’s knowledge, but it will actually improve the learning overall.
